The Tortilla Retort All Big 12 Team

Posted by dedfischer on December 2nd, 2008 under Football, Uncategorized

We’re going to do this a little different than the media in that we’ll try to fill out a depth chart versus 5 left tackles and 7 safeties.  It’s hard to beat someone that way, and our goal is to put together an all star team to play the SEC, Pac 2, and Big 2.  We’ll assume a left tackle could play right tackle, a NG could play a 3 technique, and safeties are of equal value since most teams play some variation of Cover 2.  I want the ability to move the ball with balance and the versatily to stop the run or pass.  On offense, we’ll roll with a one back, 3 WR, 1 TE set.  Although, I believe you could really wreck some shit in a 3-4 with Miller at NG, Suh and McCoy at DE and Orakpo as a rush LB, we’re going with the 4-3 as most teams run with this scheme.

1st Team Offense

QB Sam Bradford, OU - I agree with the scouts.  I think he’s got the fewest holes in his game.  McCoy is based around improvisation and Harrell is a one-two read guy.

RB Kendall Hunter, OSU – He’s not real big, but he’s the hardest guy to tackle.  Murray came on strong late, but Hunter has been more consistent.

WR Michael Crabtree, Tech – I think he’s the surest thing at the next level in this conference.

WR Dez Bryant, OSU - He’s arguably better than Crabtree once the ball is in the air.

WR Jeremy Maclin, Mizzou - Shipley had a great comeback season, but I like uber-speed at the slot receiver.  Leach came in 2nd in the Maclin and Bryant sweepstakes.  That would have been cool with Crabtree.

TE Brandon Pettigrew, OSU - One could claim that Coffman and Gresham are better receivers, and I wouldn’t disagree.  Both will be situational guys for the first couple of years in the NFL, while Pettigrew will start from day 1.  He’s like having another left tackle on the field in the run game.

LT Jason Smith, Baylor - I think Okung is a better run blocker, but there’s not a speed rusher that can get the corner on Smith.  Great athlete, who has the feet to improve in the running game.  He’s a nasty player as well, which may repulse some, but it only ups his value in my book.

LG Keith Williams, Nebraska - I thought he was the best guard I saw play all season, and being a sophomore, will only get better.

C Jon Cooper, OU – It’s a weak year for center play in the Big 12, and Cooper looked the best in the games I watched.  HenryJames is adament against this pick and Baylor’s Walton or OSU’s Washington could fill in here as well.

RG Duke Robinson, OU – He plays on the left side for OU, but I think Williams is a better fit with the athletic Smith.

RT Russell Okung, OSU – He’s not as quick as Smith, but he’s a better technician in the run game.  If I need a yard, I feel good about my chances behind Robinson and Okung on the right.  Pettigrew probably makes him look better than he really is, though.

K Dan Bailey, OSU – I plan on scoring only TDs, but in case Smith gets a personal foul in the red zone, we might need a guy that can make a field goal.  Bailey seems like the best option.

1st Team Defense

RDE Brian Orakpo, Texas – He’s the best pass rusher in this conference, although, he’s not quite the run stuffer that people believe.  Unless, left unblocked on a reverse.

DT Gerald McCoy, OU – He plays mostly as a 1 technique, but he’ll be even more productive with single team blocking as a 3.  McCoy would get my vote as the best all around interior defender.

NG Ndamukong Suh, Nebraska – He’s stuck on a shitty defense, but that’s not his fault.  I could go with Roy Miller here as well, but I think Suh is a better technician.

LDE McKinner Dixon, Tech – Brandon Williams gets more ink and sacks, but Dixon is a one man zone read stopping machine and a better all around player.  Oklahoma and Baylor ran over and around several DEs on the Tech roster, but away from him.  He’s the best run defender at DE in the conference and crafty contain man, when QBs break the pocket.

WLB Roddrick Muckelroy, Texas – I wouldn’t want to leave him in the middle and make him do much thinking, but he’s the best option in this league for making stops between the tackles and running down perimeter plays at the weakside position.  Pawelek is better at jumping routes and making tackles 6 yards down the field.  I like mine a little closer to the line of scrimmage and Muckelroy is a downhill player.

MLB Brian Duncan, Tech - He’s the best true MLB in the Big 12 and nobody reads hats better.  Inside-out, one step behind the ball carrier.  Duncan makes the fewest mental errors and finishes plays near the line.

SLB Travis Lewis, OU - I like his versatility and downhill style.  Plus, he’s the only guy at the position that can run with a TE in man coverage outside of Sexton, who is more of a safety than LB.

RCB Jacob Lacey, OSU – With most right handed QBs and Orakpo, you could put a midget on a unicycle on the right and be fine.  I like Lacey as a man-to-man guy on this side against #2 WRs.

RS Darcel McBath, Tech – He’s seen a lot of snaps and it finally paid dividends this season.  McBath can play man when asked to as evidenced by his shutout of Dez Bryant in the red zone.

LS Lendy Holmes, OU – I feel most comfortable with him as a deep threat safety valve.

LCB Dominique Franks, OU – He fared better than anyone against Crabtree and will be a 1st rounder some day.  I wouldn’t be scared to leave him on an island.

2nd Team Offense

QB Colt McCoy, Texas - You could argue that McCoy does more with less than any QB in the conference, but I still think Bradford is the best talent.

RB Demarco Murray, OU – He looked healthy to me in Norman.

WR Jordan Shipley, Texas - He’s a first teamer in most seasons.

WR Dezmon Briscoe, Kansas - Turned it on in conference play.

WR Juaquin Iglesias, OU – I’m running out of shit to say about these guys, but Quan Cosby or Ryan Tannehill would work here as well.

TE Jermain Gresham, OU - Coffman is interchangeable here, but he missed some time with injury and I think Gresham can stretch the field better.

LT Adam Ulatoski, Texas – He’s the Longhorns best OL, but not quite the athlete of the first teamers.  I love Rylan Reed to death, and pre-injury, he would have this spot.  He’s a step slower this year.

LG Louis Vasquez, Tech - This is our throwing team.  We’ll run the ball with the first unit, but as a pass blocker, it doesn’t get much better than Vasquez.

C J.D. Walton, Baylor – He’s physical enough.  An argument could be made for Washington or KU’s Ryan Cantrell.

RG Andrew Lewis, OSU - If we need to run the ball, we’ll do it on this side and Lewis is one of the more underrated guards in this conference.  He plays on the left with Okung, but will fit nicely with the next guy.

RT Marlon Winn, Tech – He’s Tech’s best OL and nastier than the women at Chances R.  You can run the ball behind him as well.

2nd Team Defense

RDE Brandon Williams, Tech – You can’t let a guy that can get to the QB like Williams slip any further than this.

DT Colby Whitlock, Tech - He covers more ground laterally than any other DT in the Big 12.  Facing single team blocking as a 3 technique would cause any team problems.  Don’t knock his play based on the OU game.  They spent their time running away from him.

NG Roy Miller, Texas – He would rotate getting equal snaps with Suh.  I won’t fight back, if Texas fans insist he’s a first teamer, but I think Suh is a more complete player.

LDE Sergio Kindle, Texas – I want to sack some more QBs and he got much better against the run as the season went on.

SLB Andre Sexton, OSU - He’s the most valuable player on the OSU defense and there’s not a better LB at perimeter defense or playing man with a TE or slot receiver.  We won’t see many offenses where he has to play between the tackles.  James Holt of Kansas would work here as well.

MLB Reggie Walker, Kansas State – He suffers from Suh syndrome of being stuck on a shitty defense.  Make no mistake about it, this guy knows how to flow to the football.

WLB Joe Pawelek, Baylor – I still think he’s overrated, but productivity and big play ability make him hard to slip any lower.  He’s a tremendous upgrade from Sean Weatherspoon.

RCB Brian Jackson, OU - He would be the best corner on most teams.

RS Daniel Charbonnet, Tech – This unit will be vulnerable to the deep ball, but we’re going for turnovers and that’s why we’ve got Williams and Kindle up front.  Charbonnet just always seems to be in the right spot.

LS William Moore, Mizzou - He had a down year playing out of position, but he belongs here when used appropriately.  One could make an argument for Nic Harris, I guess, but I’ve always thought he seems to be the root of some of OU’s defensive struggles versus being a 1st team all conference player.

LCB Jamar Wall, Tech - I think Chykie Brown of Texas might have this spot were he not injured, but Wall performed well against Dez Bryant, Juaquin Iglesias and Jordan Shipley, which can’t be dismissed.

P Justin Brantley, A&M - We’re not going to punt, but if we do, let’s go with the guy who has the most practice.

  1. I love the Chances R reference.

I think Earl Thomas could get some consideration but he’ll definitely be here next year. Texas didn’t give up many long TD’s this season and Thomas is a big reason why. Also, he’s becoming a ball hawk. 2 INTs (5 or 6 more dropped), 4 FF, 1 blocked kick, 15 PBUs.
I can’t believe Ryan Palmer made that list. Must have been his 3 sacks and 3 picks.

  3. I like Thomas a lot, but he’s still a little green around the gills compared to the guys ahead of him. I would have liked to have seen more of Aaron Williams as well. I think they both might make the list next year and Gideon will be a good one as well.

  4. “I can’t believe Ryan Palmer made that list. Must have been his 3 sacks and 3 picks.”

Palmer is evidence of the midget on a unicycle theory.

He’s not one of the 3 best corners on the team. Although his picks were all useful. I didn’t mind him being on the field, but to call him all-conference is a stretch.

  6. I like yours way better than the Big 12’s. Well done. And thanks for your contributions to Barking Carnival.

  7. Thanks for stopping by and the comments. I tried to be as completely unbiased as I could and based it off dudes and not jersey colors. With apologies to Iowa State and Colorado fans as I didn’t get a chance to see those teams play enough.

  8. Way better than the “official” selections. Officially stupid ones, those Big 12 picks. I laughed at your punter selection, but surely there’s a better punter out there! By the way, you picked a first team kicker with no second team kicker and a second team punter with no first team punter. I can understand only going one deep with special teams–I just didn’t expect to see them listed apart.

  9. You can consider the Aggies punter the first teamer.

  10. Good stuff – I got no problem with this list except that I’d put Gresham 1st team ahead of Pettigrew. Even with his 2 drops per game he’s good for at least 1-2 td’s every game. I got no qualms with Nic Harris being off the list as well, I knew he’d be on the official list because he’s been around forever but he has really struggled over the course of the year. I appreciate his hustle and leadership but some busted coverages and dumb penalties by that guy have hurt OU this year. He was good against Tech, but everyone was, outside of that – pretty average.

  11. pickup, thanks for stopping by again. I would take Gresham playing from behind, and Pettigrew playing with a lead. There’s a reason Wilson runs behind Brody Eldridge, and he’s probably OU’s most underrated offensive player. There’s never a reason to not have Pettigrew on the field. If I botched anyone from OU, it’s not finding a place for Jeremy Beal.

  12. Very true on Eldridge, very unheralded player but people know about line play know he is crucial to making that running game work and you’ve shown you know a little about line play. Good point on Beal as well, he always seems to make a few big plays every game and due to injury and lack of depth at that position he has played virtually every snap this year. He forced 3 fumbles against OSU, one that wasn’t called – big time player.

  13. Holy shit. Chances “R.”

  14. I can tell you spent a lot of time there.

  15. Ded,

When you say “Harrell is a one-two read guy”, do you mean Harrell goes through his first two reads and if they are covered, shits his pants, gets happy feet, starts back peddling and holds the ball like the Olympic torch?

    If so, I concur.

  16. I didn’t say that, but oh shit, you may be right.

Jeff Wolfert still gets no love … the Mizzou kicker is on pace to set an all time NCAA record while hitting better than 95 percent of his kicks.

  18. I have to admit I was lazy on the kickers. We went for 2 in high school and soccer style kicking was a foreign concept. You can put Wolfert on there, if you feel robbed and I won’t argue. I just didn’t anticipate kicker being an area of debate. I wouldn’t hold much weight on Reggie Walker, but I just didn’t see a whole lot of good MLB play in the conference this season and he impressed me as much as anyone Tech faced at the ILB position.
