Outdoor Retort: Visiting the Game Camera

Posted by dedfischer on April 11th, 2009 under Uncategorized

I’ve recently had a series of wildlife photos forwarded to me and a request to get to the bottom of this.  Now, allegedly these photos were taken on a game camera somewhere in South Texas.  There are a pretty wide variety of critters for South Texas, in my opinion, so I’ll just post them and let you decide for yourself:

Meet Chipper, kids.  This damn sure appears to be cougar to me.  Not unreasonable for South Texas.

Definitely deer.  Whitetail.  I’m not sure why they named him the same as the cougar.

Hoot Owl (aka Quail Murderer).

Now, this is where things start to get fishy for me.

WTF?  Is this an Angolan Ant Eater?  A Wolverine?  I didn’t think they had Taz in this country?

I’m curious how this is going to work out.  They delete the next image of two dead pigs floating in a stock tank.

Here kitty, kitty, kitty.  Bobcat.

Poachers is my guess.

  1. Ded, best guess is a White-nosed Coati. However, there’s no tail on this one & Coatis normally have a fairly long non-prehensile tail. A member of the raccoon family & the general location of where you indicate this was taken from (also evidenced by the river jumpers) would jive with where these critters are found, albeit rarely.

If that’s not right, then hell if I know what it is.

certainly looks like a hog-nosed coon with a docked tail. Weird.

  3. Coatamundi is another name, but that’s DEFINITELY what you have there. Odd that it’s tail is docked – maybe a pet that got out or a zoo critter?
Poachers? They’re poaching jobs and SSI.
