McKinner Dixon Suspended

Posted by dedfischer on April 14th, 2009 under Uncategorized

Ouch.  Mike Leach has indefinitely suspended DE McKinner Dixon for academic reasons.  There is a growing concern on my end that we will have trouble replacing the productivity of Williams and Dixon.  Maybe I’m just freaking out here.  It’s not like Dixon was one of our best players or anything.

    oh god damnit McKinner

  2. Let him go to A&M where they are not required to meet any academic requirements. If he will let you down in the offseason, he will let you down during the season when it will be much more difficult to replace him. Not only that but he is taking up a scholarship that could be going to an athlete that is responsible enough to take care of his own business.

at least he is consistent. Play one good year, dissappear, repeat.

that just like fans to kick you when your down. why aren’t those comments made when he’s on the field making sacks?

Leach takes academics seriously enough that you know a player isn’t out on the field unless his grades are in order

When he’s on the field making sacks is not the issue. The Big 12 is entirely aware of that. It’s when he’s not on the field that seems to be the problem here.

  7. The drama of the off-season is awesome! At this point all I know is that Colby Whitlock will start at DT. With Sesay having similar academic/attitude issues, it’s conceivable that we start Henley/Jones/Whitlock/Sharp with Howard/Hunter/Graves/Haliburton rotating in on passing downs. Maybe even Barr/Hyder.

Everyone gets fired up over redshirting for depth, but in this case, with eight DL graduating (or not), I think some situational snaps for these freshmen would help for 2010.

Which would currently look like this:

    (Barr or Hyder)/Graves/Whitlock/Haliburton

  8. At this pace, we will need Graves and Barr in a bad way for 2009.

Am I missing something? Isn’t it the point of suspending him now to get his attention? Then he returns to class, and can stay eligible in the fall?

  10. That’s a good point TaylorT, but Tech fans have bad memories of Dixon’s academic commitment. His football IQ is muy bueno, but having lost him in the past, and barely making the cut last fall, any whisper of him not going to class or not showing up for study hall is alarming.

  11. Dixon got credit for sacks that weren’t all his,and he also was the benefactor of others that played with in the scheme and forced the QB to him. I heard he was already in the doghouse and banned from the weightroom for failure to show up for work-outs. Who needs the lack of discipline around to infect the new guys, let alone drag down the work ethic of the program, Hats off to Coach Leach, too bad more coaches don’t have the moxie he has. Dixon has had his chances, 3 strikes and your out, let’s move on to bigger and better things, like the kids that want to put forth the effort to facilitate a winning program. Sorry Ruff, but your project has failed you and the program, play the guys that will go to school and hustle on the field.

    Taylor,

No, you’re not missing anything. Our concern is that Dixon has never stayed eligible at the D-I. Besides the semester he was admitted on.

    tt,

Dixon is a bad man and a lot of other guys got sacks that he caused. Not to mention he might be the best run stuffer at DE in the country. He virtually ended zone read success against Tech. Well, coupled with Duncan’s play at MLB and BWill not chasing play fakes. I wouldn’t call Ruff out on this particular JUCO as the risk was well worth the reward. As for the other stuff, maybe he is a head case, but I can live it for one more season.

  13. Whether or not Dixon’s 9 sacks are attributable to him or not, and coupled with the lost production from B. Williams, we’re simply not to the level that we can plug & play our recruits & not expect a substantial drop-off in production. You just don’t replace guys like Dixon & Williams on the field that easily. This will really hurt, but given his track record, no one should be surprised.

  14. I just don’t want to have an OSU Dline next year. You know, the one that couldn’t get pressure on Graham Harrell or Sam Bradford and gave up like 8 consecutive scoring drives to each.

Then again, even with Williams/Dixon, we couldn’t stop OU either. So we have that going for us.

ded – what happened to pirate thread? Too controversial?

  15. I got you one going here. I think it’s still up on Rivals.

  16. You do have to give Leach credit for keeping his teams in line, no matter how much it hurts.

At UT or OU a player gets a DUI or brings a gun to school, line them up to play the next week, and let them come to spring practice.

At least Texas Tech runs a cleaner program and UT and OU, and usually beats them in Lubbock.

Tim, what color is the sky in your world?..

  18. As I said in another thread, I had a class with Dixon last summer (the term he was admitted on.)That being said, this doesn’t surprise me even the slightest. Him being a college student makes about as much sense as me being a college football player. Sure, I can dream. But some things aren’t meant to be. It’s probably back to JUCO for this guy.

So if he passes his classes and maybe even hits summer I and II hard, will tech pay for his school, room etc. for Summer so he can get back ok the team?
