TR Post Spring Depth Chart: Defense

Posted by dedfischer on May 3rd, 2009 under Uncategorized

This list comprises what I thought were the 11 best players by position based on their performance in the R&B Game:

WDE – Rajon Henley/Daniel Howard or Brandon Sharpe

DT – Richard Jones/Victor Hunter/Britton Barbee or Myles Wade

NG – Colby Whitlock/Chris Perry/Myles Wade

SDE – Brandon Sesay/Rajon Henley/Ryan Haliburton

SLB – Bront Bird or Tyrone Sonier/Blake Collier

MLB – Brian Duncan/Sam Fehoko

WLB – Marlon Williams/Blake Collier or Sam Fehoko

LCB – Jamar Wall/Nathan Stone

Crackerback – Cody Davis/Brett Dewhurst

RS – Frank Mitchem/Jared Flannel/Andre McCorkle

RCB – Laron Moore or Taylor Charbonnet

- I actually like Collier better at the SLB position in our scheme and the bigger run stuffer Sonier competing with Marlon at WLB.  Collier is more of a big safety type, who will be asked to match up with slot receivers and Jermain Gresham once a year.  He’s a little faster than Bird, but not quite the run defender.  Sonier is a much better option between the tackles than Collier, and arguably Marlon as well, where alignment for the WLB is dictated at times.

Am I wrong?

  1. Are you red-shirting Will Ford, and Daniel Cobb in this projection?

I don’t see why we can’t use them for depth, and on special teams this year.

  2. As far as the front 7 goes, I think the 2-deep will all play, probably the 3-deep on the DL. So who actually starts is not a huge deal.

Secondary could change quite a bit before we get down to Austin, and might change more after that.

I think Mainord will settle on Davis/Mitchem/Dewhurst, and then a 4th spot will be up for grabs – Flannel/McCorkle/Freshman. And it will likely change as the year goes on.

Brian Mitchell has the toughest job. Wall is an easy choice, but the other spot has many candidates with a variety of weaknesses.

Dewhurst is your likely nickle back. Dime back could be anyone, maybe Flannel for his athleticism, or a freshman.
