TR Post Spring Depth Chart: Offense

Posted by dedfischer on May 3rd, 2009 under Uncategorized

This list comprises what I thought were the 11 best players by position based on their performance in the R&B Game:

QB – Taylor Potts/Steven Sheffield/Stefan Loucks/Seth Doege or Garrett Riley

RB – Baron Batch or Harrison Jeffers/Crawford/Stephens

2RB – Harrison Jeffers

OR – Detron Lewis/Alexander Torres

IR – Tramain Swindall/Austin Zouzalik

IR – Corndog Douglas or Austin Zouzalik

TE – Adam James (in lieu of an IR 50% of time in 2 back set)

OR – Ed Britton/Austin Zouzalik

LT – Terry McDaniel or Chris Olson

LG – Brandon Carter/Lonnie Edwards

C – Shawn Byrnes/Justin Keown

RG – Deveric Gallington/Mickey Okafor

RT – Marlon Winn/Chris Olson/David Neill

You’ll note I have Detron Lewis as an outside receiver.  Lewis, Swindall, Britton, Corndog, Zouzalik, Torres and James were our best options in the R&B Game and all look like they can play at a quality level of competence in D-I.  Lewis is a stud and your go-to guy.  He’s the best inside or outside receiver and he’ll have an easier time replacing Crabtree’s production than any other option on our roster.  Swindall is good enough to cover Lewis’ touches over the middle of the field matched up against safeties, nickel backs and linebackers.  Britton stays where he’s at and a rotation of Corndog and Zoo at the other inside receiver seeing who gets the hot hand.  Zoo has the speed to also spell Britton during concentration lapses.  Corndog’s hands looked shaky, but the guy can do too many things after the ball is in his hands not to allow him significant minutes early in the season.  Zoo is going to be a really good player for us and he has a knack for getting open, which is what this receiving corps will need.  His hands appear to be a strength, so I would imagine he would work his way into the rotation with Britton and Corndog based on how they were catching the football.  James is our only option in a TE set and he finished with 3 catches for 41 yards.  That’s enough to be respected given he’s some kind of a threat as a blocker in the run game.  I wouldn’t necessarily assign guys positions at this point, just find the best 4 options and try to get them on the field at the same time.  Lewis, Swindall and Britton are the top 3 as it stands right now.  The 4th is either Zouzalik or Corndog.  Based on the spring game, it would be Zoo.  If you want a TE set with Jeffers on the field, two of these guys gots to go.  My guess would be Swindall and the other IR.  This is where James comes into play on our roster and he won’t be in the dog house for long unless, we just simply scratch the formation from our playbook.

Just out of curiosity, why Carter at LG and not RG?

That appears to be what Moore did in the spring game. I don’t think he wants to roll with 2 new starters on the same side, so will split Winn and Carter for 2009. Plus, Gallington and McDaniel are really looking solid with Olson filling in the gaps. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Olson see more snaps than either, but split between LT and maybe RG, depending on which position is struggling the most.

any reason why Lyle Leong seems to have fallen off the face of the earth?

  4. Tortilla Thrower – He was injured and didn’t play much in the spring. A lot of people think he’ll be starting in the fall, based on some good plays last year and him being teammates with Potts in high school.

I think he’ll end up in the 2-deep, and I love his agility and leaping ability near the goal line.
