Dallas Recruiting Roundup Notes

Posted by dedfischer on February 5th, 2010 under Football

 Per Willis:

- Porter is an NFL corner.

- Phillip Warren might turn out to be the best player in the class. He really, really likes this guy.

- Whigham will be looked at on offense first.

- The only guy he previously knew about or recruited at Bama was Fred Harvey, who camped there.  Not necessarily the type of athlete he is targeting at the ILB position to chase Dan Buckner and Ryan Tannehill.  Thank God.

- Hard to find big guys that can run and will comb the desert to find them.

- Asked him how he found Cayou and he responded, “Hard work.” I sure hope this guy gets in because after watching more film on him, I’m not sure we’ve had anything like him on our roster. Ever. Crazy athlete for his size.

- Watched all the 2009 film and “can’t wait to get his hands on Bront Bird.” The impression I got was that he has met with Bird and he gets it. Says there are a ton of things that he can do with him and loves the way the guy plays. After talking to him, I felt you might see him lineup from 10 different positions in as many snaps.

- Chomping at the bit to get his hands on the players. I guess they get to start doing some sort of work with them on Monday and he’s amped.

- Asked if we would play mostly base nickel like Muschamp has done at Texas. Replied, “he’s part of the family”, which seemed to indicate affirmative in the fashion it was implied.

- All jobs are open as it stands right now and I believe him once you get past Whitlock and Bird.  And, I’ll be impressed if he finds a better player than Brian Duncan.

- What exactly we can do on defense won’t be known until spring/fall, and they’ve had a chance to work with the players.

My thoughts:

There are no guarantees we will be better on defense, even if we hired Bill Belichick. However, I can tell you with a 110% confidence that we are going to be faster. Fo sho.

My expectation is the team will go from 6th overall in defense to the # 3 position in the Big 12. The changes wont be so dramatic in talent but the technique, the mindset and the “scheme” will simply eliminate the things our oppponents like to do. Then its only a matter of eliminating the mental breakdowns which generates the big play ie 30 plus yards at a crack. Think Baylor 09, texas 08, OK 08.
I’d expect to see a level of disruption not witnessed in Texas since the Aggies Wrecking crew. Our new mantra on defense will be “slash, burn and pillage” . I like that.

I’d like to think that with a couple more years to recruit his style of players, we would be challenging for the top couple spots for B-12 defense. But then again, I have these damn rose-colored implants.
