Breakout Players: Big 12 South

Posted by dedfischer on February 15th, 2010 under Football

I've heard some recent complaints about Ivan Maisel's breakout player picks for the Big 12.  I can understand your frustrations, but I didn't think those were too bad of picks outside of Dixon possibly never making it to campus.  Here are a couple of guys from each South team that I've got my eye on headed into the season: Texas Longhorns Offense - OL Tray Allen - I'm not sure if he's an inside or outside guy this year,

Two Loops & a Hooey – Valentine’s Day Edition

Posted by dedfischer on February 14th, 2010 under Football

I got my Valentine's Day wrapped and slapped two days ago, so I've got the rest of the day off.  I've mentioned in passing that my neighbor, Panama, has claimed to be a relative of Vince Young's by marriage.  Now, I've never really questioned his claim as everything he has told me over the last 4 or 5 years has panned out.  On Friday night, Panama bangs on the door about 7:30, pops his head in, and

Two Loops & a Hooey – Pioneer Edition

Posted by dedfischer on February 7th, 2010 under Football

This is a new feature I'll try to do a better job of keeping up with this offseason.  The Cheerleader of the Week gig kind of got old.  I still looked at pictures, but I ran out of material quickly.  Since I can't sleep past 6:30 anymore, Sunday mornings will serve well for the matter. It's kind of a stupid, interesting or funny story how I came up with that name.  I'll tell you how it

Recruiting Retort: Offense

Posted by dedfischer on February 6th, 2010 under Football

Well, Kadron Boone gave us a 6-month lap dance before bolting to a swankier joint and better tips in New Orleans.  Let me tell you something, Kadron, it's not all its cracked up to be.  Next thing you know, you're stuck in a dive fetish joint off Bourbon Street asking how your life has come to a series of $100 transactions for Louisiana Congressmen to urinate on your leg.  Good luck. Onto the new Red Raiders and we'll use

Dallas Recruiting Roundup Notes

Posted by dedfischer on February 5th, 2010 under Football

Per Willis: - Porter is an NFL corner. - Phillip Warren might turn out to be the best player in the class. He really, really likes this guy. - Whigham will be looked at on offense first.  - The only guy he previously knew about or recruited at Bama was Fred Harvey, who camped there.  Not necessarily the type of athlete he is targeting at the ILB position to chase Dan Buckner and Ryan Tannehill.  Thank God. -

Horns Lose Mason Walters for Spring

Posted by dedfischer on February 5th, 2010 under Football

The Barking Carnival reports Frenship native Mason Walters will miss spring practice after undergoing foot surgery.  Walters was expected to compete for a starting job, possibly at left tackle to replace Adam Ulatoski. RT Kyle Hix will most likely be given a shot at the left side in the spring.  Serious competition will come from the next best option on the Longhorn bus, an empty propane bottle, which showed promise in fall practice while redshirting.

Recruiting Retort: Defense

Posted by dedfischer on February 3rd, 2010 under Football

The good football teams I have witnessed typically consist of 3 to 4 primary playmakers on each side of the ball surrounded by role players.  Now, the quality of the 3 or 4 stars definitely has an impact on the upside of your win column, but the quality of the role players determines the degree of sucktitude at your weak spot.  We know who the 3 or 4 linchpin guys are heading into this season on defense, and we also

2010 NFL Draft – TR Top 10 Big 12 Ballers

Posted by dedfischer on January 31st, 2010 under Football

While we're patiently waiting for recruiting to wrap up, I'll jot down some thoughts on the best players in the conference, so Barking Carnival and Boomer & Sooner colleagues can come tell me how I've lost my mind.  I'll just list these guys in order of least likely to bust.  There is no way I can miss on the first guy: Can't Miss Dudes: 1.  DL Ndamukong Suh, Nebraska - Duh.  He's the best I've ever seen at the position

Stupid Neutral-Site Games That Would Never Happen

Posted by chicagottu on January 21st, 2010 under Football

So the hot new thing in sports is to host sporting events at unlikely venues. Last year I attended the Blackhawks vs RedWings game on New Year’s Day at Wrigley Field. Aside from being ultra-pricey, it was pretty cool. (Thank you wasted Southside-Irish guy for smuggling in that bottle of Admiral Nelson. Genius.) Actually, now that I think about it, this isn’t really anything new. The NFL has played in Mexico and is playing across the

If economist ever needed extra evidence to prove inelastic demand, I’d point them to our athletic programs. When I saw this slide show from CNBC I can’t say I was shocked. We finished the year as the 12th most profitable basketball program in the NCAA tournament and third in the Big 12 behind KU and

Could you write a bit about the NCAA’s origins and how they evolved into a hugefuckingmongous commercial operation.

Do they have a P&L anyone can review?

I think non-profits generally get fucked up due to absence of the profit motive but for these guys to wield their power (or not) in

The chance to “play” some real teams you might not see otherwise would be very cool. Bit TV and ticket sales…

I guess the issues are injuries, wanting to work out lots of guys (inter-squad would be cutting their reps in half), and losing to face by getting skunked by somebody.

I have been sitting here for the last few weeks looking forward to spring football in South Bend. With the regime change there should be plenty to talk about over the next few weeks as we get a first look at how Brian Kelly will run things.

Want to figure out which teams in the Big Dance really have a shot to win it all? Glean some information from the folks that make predictions for a living.

Awesome stuff. Really looking forward to seeing how you and the Baylor guys do. Big expectations, small pedigrees. Rooting for our Big 12 brethren.

And I have always felt the Olive Gardeb bottomless bowl of salad and bread sticks were very underrated fro a college student.
