Recruiting Retort: Offense

Posted by dedfischer on February 6th, 2010 under Football

Well, Kadron Boone gave us a 6-month lap dance before bolting to a swankier joint and better tips in New Orleans.  Let me tell you something, Kadron, it's not all its cracked up to be.  Next thing you know, you're stuck in a dive fetish joint off Bourbon Street asking how your life has come to a series of $100 transactions for Louisiana Congressmen to urinate on your leg.  Good luck. Onto the new Red Raiders and we'll use

Recruiting Retort: Defense

Posted by dedfischer on February 3rd, 2010 under Football

The good football teams I have witnessed typically consist of 3 to 4 primary playmakers on each side of the ball surrounded by role players.  Now, the quality of the 3 or 4 stars definitely has an impact on the upside of your win column, but the quality of the role players determines the degree of sucktitude at your weak spot.  We know who the 3 or 4 linchpin guys are heading into this season on defense, and we also

Recruiting Worm Turning with Backyard Talent

Posted by dedfischer on December 22nd, 2009 under Football

I'm talking about Clay McGuire and Lincoln Riley to clarify for Tech fans.  With almost 2 recruiting classes under their belts, it's becoming apparent that Mike Leach has found a couple of ace closers for the recruiting trail.  McGuire has been particularly effective at picking up where Seth Littrell left off in the Oklahoma market.  Even more impressive may have been his theft of Abilene's Will Ford and Wichita Falls' Eric Ward from the Sooner commit list last

Updated Top Recruiting Targets for 2010

Posted by dedfischer on March 28th, 2009 under Recruiting

Since the last time we took a look at this list, Scotty Young (QB), Aaron Spikes (RB) and Zac Winbush (LB) have committed in addition to Troy Baker (OT) and Jackson Richards (SDE).  I like all these players and feel Winbush addresses some much needed athleticism at the LB position.  Here's my wishlist of guys we have a realistic shot at and hold offers: Luke Joeckel, OT - I'm a big fan and outside of Jake Matthews, I don't

2009 DE Aundrey Barr Highlights

Posted by dedfischer on March 23rd, 2009 under Recruiting

A quick google search revealed the only highlight film I've seen on 2009 signee Aundrey Barr.  This guy is actually a much better prospect than what I anticipated.  Actually, I believe he's our best DE signee after seeing his film. http://www.maxpreps.com/FanPages/MaxPrepsTV.mxp/VideoID-5cd46464-c7ee-4266-bc01-68d8b90b033d Barr has a really quick first-step and good closing speed.  I'm also impressed with how well he handles containment duties and maintains outside leverage on running plays.  His football IQ seems to indicate he has

TR 2010 OL Recruit Perspective

Posted by dedfischer on March 7th, 2009 under Recruiting

I've had a request for a Top 100 Recruit list, which I have neither the time nor desire to complete with any accuracy.  I have no idea, if the 6th best WR in Texas should be valued more than the 3rd best OL, and frankly the concept makes little sense to me.  I prefer the old school Dave Campbell's positional breakdown, and a more practical comparison against direct peers.  I can't tell shit about skill players,

LSR Top 100 Thoughts

Posted by dedfischer on March 5th, 2009 under Recruiting

Geoff Ketchum has released the latest Top 100 Recruit rankings after the final wave of commits settled on UT.  Personally, I don't think this list is any more or less credible than any other list, and there has to be a lot of work that goes into simply gathering such an item.  It's impossible to be completely accurate as you're rating an inexact science.  The list is notoriously viewed as biased towards Texas, but I don't

Recruiting Targets 2010

Posted by dedfischer on March 5th, 2009 under Recruiting

Well now that Texas has filled its 2010 recruiting class, the rest of us can begin and hopefully we had backup plans for the expected Longhorn takes.  Let's take a look at who I would like to see Tech land based on the remaining outstanding offers per Red Raider Sports (spend the $10/month, if you haven't already): QB Matt Joeckel, 6'4" 220 lbs, Arlington Zach Lee, 6'4", 195 lbs, McKinney Scotty Young, 6'3", 185 lbs, Denton Frankly, I'll take

Recruiting Retort: Offensive Line

Posted by dedfischer on February 15th, 2009 under Recruiting

I already had the Merlot covered a couple of hours ahead of time on Valentine's Day.  I got back from the store, clicked on the omnipresent Red Raider Sports (best $10 a Tech fan can spend every month) for the latest Leach contract update, said screw it, broke into the Merlot before my date showed up and decided to talk some big ugglies.  I'm referring to the offensive line, a position I spent manning in high

Recruiting Retort: Linebacker

Posted by dedfischer on February 8th, 2009 under Recruiting

This is my favorite position to evaluate given I spent my own personal time in high school bouncing around various positions/schemes/coaches/etc. in the general vicinity of LB. Brandon Mahoney, 6'2", 210 lbs, Keller, TX, WLB - Mahoney was a one time OU commit and whether or not Stoops decided to part ways with him is of no significance to me.  It goes back to the relative issue.  Relative to Marlon Williams and Julius Howard, this guy will do just

It appears the NCAA intends to expand its annual basketball tournament to a ludicrous 96 teams.  Nearly 100 teams, competing in a single-elimination tournament to crown a champion.  March Madness, indeed.

Money is obviously the motivating factor here.  The NCAA makes cash hand-over-fist during tournament time, and there’s a certain simple-minded economic logic behind

I didn’t watch all the games you guys played all year but yesterday’s game seemed to me to hinge on the ineffectiveness of Sherron. really sad for that guy as he’s a baller. I think Ojanb Bob said this over at BC too. He just couldn’t get it done on either

Welcome, Adam. What a freaking win today. Amazing game.

At this point you guys are a MASH unit so I don’t see you guys winning two more but you never know!

Good to be able to admit fault and correct it.

This game next year could be an ESPN Game Day special and if so, you’re taking me.

    Nate,

Missed the point, but par for the course. I’ll go back to my developmentally challenged assistance home and cry.

Indeed, back on point. Any rumblings about anyone else on the take? Tiny and TMG had great panache’. They sounded like a Vegas show….

I agree the RG position will be the most interesting development of the Spring. Last year Okafor couldn’t drive block and couldn’t run in the open field on screen plays. If he’s not physically capable of losing weight and improving, I want to know who will replace him. Suh and McCoy may

I wish they weren’t playing Kentucky next. Same goes for #11 seed Washington having to play West Virginia.

Sucks that we are getting the two best teams left in the tourney playing in the Elite 8 possibly.

An already painful week turned excruciating for Carlo Ancelotti. After being dumped out of the Champions League midweek by former hero Jose Mourinho, Chelsea failed to rebound and dropped two valuable points at Blackburn. Manchester United edged Liverpool and now control the Premier League race.

A forlorn figure on the touchline, Carlo Ancelotti could

With Leach at the wheel I was expecting a 10 win minimum season with the guys this team has coming back in 2010. Now with Tubbs, Willis, and Brown running the show I’m in agreement it’s anywhere between 9-12 wins this year.

Very exciting to hear your take on the O-line ded, as
