Two Loops & a Hooey – Winter Olympic Edition

Posted by dedfischer on February 20th, 2010 under Uncategorized

A little known fact about me is that I was the Texas 4-H air pistol state champion in what I recall as about the 7th grade.  Impressive, you say?  Well, it's kind of a funny story in a way.  My shooting abilities were fostered under a 4-H program that literally spit out Olympic hopefuls.  We might have had as many as 2 or 3 shooters qualify for the Olympic Trials in a given year.  It

Baylor Post Mortem

Posted by RRR on February 16th, 2010 under Basketball

On a night when Baylor introduced Kenneth Starr as their new president (a man capable of spending $70 million of the tax payers’ money for a soiled dress), the athletes on the floor for Baylor made the better statement.

Breakout Players: Big 12 South

Posted by dedfischer on February 15th, 2010 under Football

I've heard some recent complaints about Ivan Maisel's breakout player picks for the Big 12.  I can understand your frustrations, but I didn't think those were too bad of picks outside of Dixon possibly never making it to campus.  Here are a couple of guys from each South team that I've got my eye on headed into the season: Texas Longhorns Offense - OL Tray Allen - I'm not sure if he's an inside or outside guy this year,

Two Loops & a Hooey – Valentine’s Day Edition

Posted by dedfischer on February 14th, 2010 under Football

I got my Valentine's Day wrapped and slapped two days ago, so I've got the rest of the day off.  I've mentioned in passing that my neighbor, Panama, has claimed to be a relative of Vince Young's by marriage.  Now, I've never really questioned his claim as everything he has told me over the last 4 or 5 years has panned out.  On Friday night, Panama bangs on the door about 7:30, pops his head in, and

Two Loops & a Hooey – Pioneer Edition

Posted by dedfischer on February 7th, 2010 under Football

This is a new feature I'll try to do a better job of keeping up with this offseason.  The Cheerleader of the Week gig kind of got old.  I still looked at pictures, but I ran out of material quickly.  Since I can't sleep past 6:30 anymore, Sunday mornings will serve well for the matter. It's kind of a stupid, interesting or funny story how I came up with that name.  I'll tell you how it

Recruiting Retort: Offense

Posted by dedfischer on February 6th, 2010 under Football

Well, Kadron Boone gave us a 6-month lap dance before bolting to a swankier joint and better tips in New Orleans.  Let me tell you something, Kadron, it's not all its cracked up to be.  Next thing you know, you're stuck in a dive fetish joint off Bourbon Street asking how your life has come to a series of $100 transactions for Louisiana Congressmen to urinate on your leg.  Good luck. Onto the new Red Raiders and we'll use

Dallas Recruiting Roundup Notes

Posted by dedfischer on February 5th, 2010 under Football

Per Willis: - Porter is an NFL corner. - Phillip Warren might turn out to be the best player in the class. He really, really likes this guy. - Whigham will be looked at on offense first.  - The only guy he previously knew about or recruited at Bama was Fred Harvey, who camped there.  Not necessarily the type of athlete he is targeting at the ILB position to chase Dan Buckner and Ryan Tannehill.  Thank God. -

Horns Lose Mason Walters for Spring

Posted by dedfischer on February 5th, 2010 under Football

The Barking Carnival reports Frenship native Mason Walters will miss spring practice after undergoing foot surgery.  Walters was expected to compete for a starting job, possibly at left tackle to replace Adam Ulatoski. RT Kyle Hix will most likely be given a shot at the left side in the spring.  Serious competition will come from the next best option on the Longhorn bus, an empty propane bottle, which showed promise in fall practice while redshirting.

Recruiting Retort: Defense

Posted by dedfischer on February 3rd, 2010 under Football

The good football teams I have witnessed typically consist of 3 to 4 primary playmakers on each side of the ball surrounded by role players.  Now, the quality of the 3 or 4 stars definitely has an impact on the upside of your win column, but the quality of the role players determines the degree of sucktitude at your weak spot.  We know who the 3 or 4 linchpin guys are heading into this season on defense, and we also
